Saving Rehabilitation Costs with Capitalized Cable Assessment Program

The Situation

Cable Inspection Case Study (1)

CenterPoint Energy’s underground cable system comprises more than 18,000 loops, spanning nearly 13,000 miles throughout the Houston metropolitan area. Of the entire cable population, 27% were at least 35 years old and responsible for 44% of the underground cable system outages, becoming the utility’s target focus for population rehabilitation.

CenterPoint’s initial strategy was run-to-failure (RTF), replacing an average of 35 cables annually. These annual replacements were based on loop age and historical failure rate. Under this costly approach, the estimated timeframe to replace the aged population would take more than 100 years to complete.
