The Situation

Navigating the bog rivers, lakes, and muskegs of Northern Manitoba to reach utility poles is no easy task, yet regular maintenance is essential due to the rapid rot and strength loss brought on by the wet and freezing conditions.

Winter months are often the only time many of
Manitoba Hydro’s power poles can be reached,
as the surface freezes solid in the brutal cold. Sometimes unnavigable ridges and other challenging topography often
force crews kilometers off-track to get to the next pole.

Despite these challenges, maintaining these poles is vital, as replacing them in remote areas is costly and difficult.
