Modeling a Truss Guy in O-Calc Pro – O-Calc Pro Wiki

O-Calc Pro has supported several types of guying in previous versions; these include down guys, span-head guys, sidewalk guys, and pushbraces. Additional guying options have been introduced that allow for the modeling of a truss guy, or a guy wire that can be used without having to touch the ground. Below is an image showing how the finished product looks in O-Calc Pro:

Now, to generate a truss guy, a user can start with a pole in need of guying to reduce it’s capacity.

This angle pole shows that it is currently overloaded by almost 20%. Now, let us assume that there is no room for a down guy near the base of this pole, and a span-head guy is too expensive since a new pole would have to be set. One option is to utilize the truss guy option.

Begin by modeling a down guy; take an anchor from the master catalog, and place it on the pole. Then add a guy wire to that anchor; the attachment height is irrelevant for now.

Next, select the guy wire and view its attribute table. Among the attributes, is the Type attribute. Change this from a down guy to a truss guy.

When this is changed, both the anchor on the pole and the guy wire are modified to look something like the image below:

At this stage, the truss guy is created. Now we need only modify our attachment heights, and our strut characteristics.

Let us begin with the attachment height of the top of the truss guy. When the guy wire is selected, the Installation height attribute can be changed to modify the height of the top of the truss guy.

To modify the bottom attachment height of the truss guy, the anchor must be selected (this is easiest to do in the inventory window, since no anchor is drawn in the 3D view. In this window, the Delta Height attribute can be used to set the attachment height of the bottom of the truss guy.

To modify the strut heights and properties, the guy wire must be selected. In this window, the filter drop down arrow can be clicked, and the filter changed from “Standard” to “Truss”, to view attributes related to a truss guy.

In this window, Strut Height can be used to set the height of the uppermost strut, and Lower Strut Height can be used to set the attachment height of the lowest strut. Additionally, Strut Length and Strut Diameter can be modified based on construction standards.

These attributes can be modified to reduce overall capacity of the pole being modeled.
