Substation Expansion Helps Utility Meet Increased Demand

The Situation

Located in the heart of the Permian Basin, Lea County stands as one of the most prolific oil and gas hubs in the United States, fueling both state and national energy outputs. This booming industry has driven a surge in electricity demand, pushing the limits of Lea County Electric Cooperative's (LCEC) infrastructure. Established in 1949, LCEC now powers over 16,000 meters across six counties in New Mexico and Texas. To meet the region’s growing needs and ensure uninterrupted service to its vital oil and gas customers, LCEC embarked on a major infrastructure overhaul, including the addition of new substations to enhance reliability and efficiency.
